How to stay Positive even when it’s hard to

Before I had my stroke in 2012, I was a negative person. What I mean by that, is I didn’t appreciate what I had back then, I was independent, completing the Diploma in Youth and Community Services through Praxis, a practical faith-based training for up and coming youth workers. I was completing my practical hours at the Porirua Alternative School. Working a good 5 days of the week, I felt like I had what I wanted out of life. I was living in a warm, ventilated place, I got on with my flatmates, I would spend most of my evenings with my BFF Mel who I see as like the sister I never had, I had a church family. I was able to walk anywhere, I had a lot of energy, so I was able to do way more than I can now. I was able to do acts of service to show my love towards those I cared for. I was healthier than I am now physically. But I wasn’t happy within myself then it all changed, within 30 seconds. I had the stroke. My world was turned upside down. I could have stayed within the turmoil, of my life being changed, but I chose to use this as an opportunity.
Has anyone done strengths finder? I did and two of my top strengths are communication and positivity. I was sick physically but I had unconditional love around me, and I chose to accept the love my “new family” gave me. This made me more accepting of myself and my weirdness.
I live by the belief that we all have a choice, to stay stuck in the shit or move on and be thankful for what you have.
My Tips:
Get enough sleep
Get up and dressed. Wear something you feel #flawless in even if you don’t feel like it
Make your bed
Look in the mirror smile and tell yourself “you are amazing!”
Fill your room with beauty, use colour and use positive quotes
Sit and just be present (Think about all that you have achieved so far)
Do whatever gives you life
Go for a walk
Phone a friend or text
Watch funny animal videos (or Harry Styles videos)
Eat well, fill up on fruit, vegetables and protein and/or smoothies
Practice good self-care (Listen to your body, rest if you need to, take timeout)
Accept the things you cannot change.
Problem solve negative situations. Decide on whether you can choose away around them and make them more bearable for you.
Ditch the people that tear you down and bring negative vibes
Surround yourself with positive people, who affirm you and make you feel good
